My essay will be about my experiences when I first came to America. And the things that I had to do to learn English. How I learned to speak English. The matters that I used to learn it. The hardship that I had to go through because I didn’t know how to speak and how I persevered through those problems. Some of the things that I liked during those times were also the things that I hated. I also tell them who helped me during those times and how they helped me.
My audience for my essay is my peers in my class. Some of the most meaningful insights that I gained in this phase regarding language and literacy are that I had to go through a lot of problems on my side like I didn’t understand what people were saying to me at first. Sometimes I understood some words when they were talking to me and I used to guess the rest of the things that they were saying. One thing that has impacted me the most in my learning and my writing practice is my friends because they used to help me a lot when it comes to making me understand things that teachers used to tell me. Sometimes they used to simply what the teacher was asking me so I can understand. They also helped me with my grammar they knew that English wasn’t my first language so when I used to ask them to check something over they used to check and tell me if I had to change something to make it grammatically correct. Also, some of the teachers helped me too especially my ELA teacher from my middle school Ms. Benko she knew that I was very bad at reading so she used to help me with the reading also she helped me with pronouncing some of the big words that I had a problem with. Some of the teachers also used to help me after school with my homework because they knew that I couldn’t understand. One of the course assignments that helped me to achieve the Course learning Outcomes is the explore and analyze, in writing and reading, a variety of genres and rhetorical situations charting because that helped me understand a text better and broke it down. To be honest, at first, charting was very hard for me because you have to understand what a certain part of the text was talking about, and then you have to break it down so when you tell your peers you understand what was going on that part. It also helped me in a way because I had to make sure that I am informed about what I was talking about because if I was wrong then I would be telling people the wrong things. For me, the things that were hard for me at first those things end up helping me the most with literacy and language. Like in the middle they made me take a class where they used to teach us how to pronounce things correctly also they used to teach us how to speak properly. I hated that so much at that time, but as time passed, I understood why I needed that class and how much that class helped me till now.
